MGM Grand vs New York New York?

I am going to Vegas in December with a bunch of people who have never been. We don't want to spend a lot of money but we have narrowed our hotel choices to MGM Grand or New York New York. Which has a better view of the strip? Which has nicer rooms? Any other info will be great also. Thanks!
